Diabetic Retinal Disease Rates Narrow by Diabetes Type

US claims data showed rising prevalence of diabetic retinal disease in type 1 and type 2 diabetes, while incidence declined in type 1 diabetes and moved closer to type 2 rates by 2022.

Research led by Sonny Caplash at the University of Pennsylvania reveals a rise in diabetic retinal disease (DRD) prevalence among type 1 and type 2 diabetes patients from 2016 to 2021, with type 1 diabetes showing higher rates. The study analyzed data from over 3.6 million patients and found that while overall DRD incidence in type 1 diabetes declined, it approached that of type 2 diabetes by 2022. The rising prevalence may reflect an increasing diabetes population, while improved diabetes care possibly contributed to the decrease in incidence, particularly in type 1 patients.
