Large Swedish cohort study finds children hospitalized for respiratory syncytial virus at older ages have greater risk of subsequent bacterial pneumonia

A Swedish cohort study reveals that children hospitalized for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) at older ages face a significantly elevated risk of bacterial pneumonia later in childhood. Analyzing data from over 1.6 million children born from 1998 to 2015, the study found that the risk of bacterial pneumonia correlates with the age of first RSV hospitalization. Those hospitalized between 18-23 months show an eight-fold increased risk of subsequent pneumonia. These findings emphasize the need for improved RSV prevention strategies.
