Guideline Gap in Facial Trauma Imaging

Retrospective study highlights practice variation and continued use of low-value radiographic imaging for maxillofacial trauma evaluation

A recent study from the University of Michigan Medical School reveals that despite guidelines recommending computed tomography (CT) for facial trauma assessment, 26% of patients received plain radiography first, highlighting a significant gap between best practices and actual imaging practices. Analyzing data from 2013 to 2022, the study noted a decline in plain radiography use alongside a rise in CT usage. Notably, gender disparities in imaging decisions were observed, as women were more likely to initially receive radiography, potentially due to implicit bias. Enhanced adherence to imaging guidelines could optimize patient care.
