Midlife Vitamin D Linked to Lower Tau

Higher vitamin D levels in early midlife were tied to lower tau burden on later brain imaging, while no association was seen with amyloid.

A study published in Neurology Open Access found that higher circulating vitamin D levels in early midlife are associated with significantly lower tau deposition on brain imaging approximately 16 years later among dementia-free adults. The research analyzed data from 435 participants in the Framingham Heart Study to measure serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and later assessed tau and amyloid burdens via PET imaging. No significant association was found between vitamin D levels and amyloid burden, indicating vitamin D could be a modifiable factor influencing preclinical dementia markers.
