Influenza Vaccine Dose and Dementia Outcomes

US claims data compare high- vs standard-dose formulations in patients aged 65 years or more over 3 years of follow-up

A study found that high-dose influenza vaccination in patients aged 65 and older was associated with a reduced risk of developing Alzheimer dementia within 25 months compared to standard-dose vaccination. Using a large database, researchers observed 185,183 high-dose and 53,918 standard-dose trials, adjusting for confounding factors. Results indicated a lower cumulative risk of Alzheimer dementia with high-dose vaccine, particularly among women. However, limitations such as short follow-up and potential misclassification were noted, leaving underlying mechanisms unclear.
